# Medicare has a separate cost conversation

A familiar medicine name can lead to different coverage paths, depending on why it is prescribed.

## Medicare’s prescription benefit, Part D

Federal law still kept weight-loss use outside ordinary Medicare Part D coverage when checked September 26, 2026.

Another accepted use, such as type 2 diabetes care, may open Part D coverage; each plan still applies its own drug list and approval terms.

Ask the prescriber to explain the medical reason. Then ask the plan which payment rules apply to that exact product.

## The Bridge: temporary help paying for medicine

Medicare calls its temporary payment program for selected medicines the GLP-1 Bridge. The medicines copy a body signal called GLP-1, which helps control appetite and blood sugar.

CMS runs Medicare. Its Bridge terms checked September 26, 2026 set the patient’s share at $50 for a monthly supply, for eligible people and selected medicines.

The Bridge sits outside ordinary Part D, with a July 1, 2026 launch and a December 31, 2027 end date.

### Check whether you qualify

Age and health conditions affect who can use the Bridge, under rules checked September 26, 2026. Having a GLP-1 prescription paid through Part D in 2026 rules out Bridge help for that year. A prescription and prior authorization, meaning approval before payment, are required.

The Bridge leaves out type 2 diabetes because that care belongs in the usual Part D process.

Ask the prescriber to check the full CMS criteria. A brief description cannot settle your eligibility.

## What that payment does not do

Under Bridge terms checked September 26, 2026, people on low incomes get no extra payment help. Your Bridge payments are left out when Part D adds up your spending toward its limit for the year.

The Bridge rules do not let you add a coupon or another discount to the same medicine bill.
