# Ask which kind of medicine is proposed

The name, the form and the reason for prescribing belong together in the conversation.

← The opening page

## A reviewed product

Semaglutide comes in the brands Ozempic and Wegovy, which include pills and shots. The US medicine review agency, FDA, has approved Ozempic for uses including type 2 diabetes care, and Wegovy for uses including weight loss. The forms and approvals were checked September 26, 2026.

Have the person treating you write down the exact product and its intended use. A brand name alone may leave the form unclear.

### A compounded preparation

In compounding, a pharmacy mixes or prepares a medicine for a patient instead of handing over a drug maker’s finished product.

As checked September 26, 2026, these compounded drugs remain without FDA approval.

Before sale, FDA does not check how safely they are made, how well they work or their quality.

FDA says a compounded drug may meet a need an approved drug cannot, or fill a gap if that drug is unavailable.

## A Minnesota limit on copies

Minnesota law checked October 1, 2026 bars pharmacy-made close copies of a drug already available to buy. An exception concerns a change made for a named patient that produces a meaningful difference for that person.

Deciding whether that change matters for the patient is the job of the person writing the prescription.

Ask what specific need the change would address for you. A cheaper headline leaves that medical question unanswered.

## A shortage claim needs its date

Tirzepatide is a medicine used for diabetes or weight care, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound. Neither tirzepatide nor semaglutide injection appeared on FDA’s shortage list when checked September 26, 2026.

FDA keeps a national drug-shortage list. Under federal rules checked September 26, 2026, being on that list can allow pharmacy-made copies that would otherwise be restricted. Your pharmacy may be out even when the drug is absent from FDA’s national list.

Ask which current rule supports the proposed preparation. Do not use an old shortage headline to settle the question.

### “Generic” has a different meaning

No generic version of semaglutide or tirzepatide was FDA-approved and ready to be sold in the US when checked September 26, 2026.

A generic copy of a brand-name drug passes FDA approval; compounding alone never gives a preparation that reviewed status.

Ask the person treating you to use the exact product name in your written plan.
