# Make space for an assessment

You can ask for help with a health concern without arriving committed to a particular medicine.

← The opening page

## Say what you hope will change

Use your own words for the concern. Ask how the assessment would work and which choices, including waiting, could follow.

### Bring the names you already have

Keep your current medicine names and any recent test results within reach. Ask what else the person treating you wants before the visit.

## Expect room for questions

Medical boards’ advice from May 2026 calls for a chance to ask the person treating you questions. A menu where you simply pick a treatment falls short of that standard.

The group giving this advice represents doctor-licensing boards. It is called the Federation of State Medical Boards. The advice is a suggested standard; state law sets the rules doctors must follow.

## Ask what another test would answer

The medical boards put responsibility for needed tests on the doctor. Their advice offers these ways to handle it: do the tests, arrange them, or refer you elsewhere for testing.

Ask what finding would change the plan. Ask for the test’s price before agreeing to it.

## Leave with the next conversation clear

Ask who handles later questions, how to reach them and whether that contact has a fee. A written plan can keep those details in one place.
