Ask what your plan will pay

Tell the insurer the proposed medicine and its intended use, then ask about the visit charge as a separate item.

Find the drug list

A formulary is a health plan’s covered-drug list; coverage can also depend on prior authorization, an insurer’s approval before payment.

Have the insurer look up that product by its full name. Keep the reply with your quote. Ask what paperwork the prescriber would need to send.

Separate the appointment from the prescription

In telehealth, you and the person treating you are apart; a video appointment is an example. Under Minnesota’s Telehealth Act, most private health plans must cover care this way as they cover care in person, as checked October 1, 2026.

That insurance rule does not add an excluded medicine to your plan or require payment for care the plan does not cover.

Ask the plan about the appointment first, then ask about the prescription.

Public plans need their own coverage check

The state law leaves out the public health programs under Minnesota legal chapters 256B and 256L, as checked October 1, 2026.

Ask your plan: “Is mine one of the state programs this law leaves out?” If you have Medicare, ask your Medicare plan about payment; the private-plan rule above does not answer that question.

Ask for your share

Request your share of the visit, tests and medicine bill. Ask the insurer: “If I pay cash, will it count toward what I must spend before my plan starts paying? Will it count toward my yearly limit on what I pay?”
